First tourists, scaling the peak and changing landscape

HistoryEncounter with the first tourists
Tourism began in this region in the early nineteenth century, not thanks to mountaineers as in many parts of the Alps, but due to the many visiting mineralogists and geologists. In 1864, two English travelers and writers, Josiah Gilbert and George Churchill Cheetham, published the bookThe Dolomite Mountains”. After the publication of that book the name “Dolomites” was definitively applied to this geographical region.

Scaling the peak
In 1862, three students Paul Grohmann, Edmund Mojsisovics and Guido Sommaruga founded the Austrian Alpine Club. During the years that followed, Paul Grohmann was the first to conquer a series of mountains among the most impressive in the Dolomites, such as the Tofane, the Antelao, the Sassolungo and the Big Peak of Lavaredo.

A changing landscape
These mountains soon proved to be a fantastic playground for free time, leisure and adventure. Every year, millions of people visit these stone monuments to be enchanted by their beauty; monuments which, in turn, have been shaped by human hand.
