Die Seceda in den Dolomiten – Val Gardena

Spectacular panoramic views – information from VIVODolomites

Seceda is a mountain in the Dolomites above Ortisei in Val Gardena, rising to 2,518 metres. It lies within the Puez-Odle Nature Park and forms the iconic ridge overlooking the Odle peaks.

Photo spot and viewpoint – thats why Seceda is so famous

Seceda is one of the most photographed spots in the Dolomites – and for good reason. The narrow ridge, with its distinctive green humps in the foreground and the rugged Odle peaks rising behind, creates a scene that has long achieved cult status on social media. The view from the mountain station towards the ridge is particularly popular, offering the quintessential vista where gentle grassy slopes give way dramatically to jagged rocky peaks.
Not far from the summit cross, a panoramic viewpoint offers sweeping 360° views: from here, the vista stretches across the Dolomites to the Brenta, Adamello and Ortler ranges, continuing to the Ötztal and Stubai Alps and as far as the Großglockner. An orientation panel identifies the most prominent peaks, including their altitudes.

How do i get to Seceda, Italy?

Unfortunately, a popular tourist destination also means limited parking spaces. We therefore recommend travelling by public transport to the Antoniusplatz/Piazza S. Antonio stop in Ortisei. The valley station of the Seceda cable car is just a six-minute walk from the stop. The cable car ticket can easily be booked online in advance.

The Seceda hiking area

Seceda is the starting point for some of the most beautiful hikes in the Dolomites. From the ridge, marked paths lead in all directions – for leisurely strollers as well as for ambitious mountain hikers. A classic hike leads to the Pieralongia Hut, around a 45-minute walk from the mountain station, at the foot of the “Steinzähne – Denti di Pietra”, two impressive rock formations. The trail continues to the World Heritage Terrace at 2,200 metres before heading towards the Baita Odles Hut, a wonderful place to linger and take in the magnificent views, with its petting zoo and children’s playground. A gentle downhill walk takes you to the Fermeda chairlift, which then carries you back up the mountain. From there, it’s just another 10 minutes to the Seceda cable car, which takes you back down to Ortisei. An easy hike of about 1.5 hours, yet with plenty of spectacular views.
Equally easy and rewarding is the hike from the mountain station to the Troier Hütte hut, passing the mountain lake “Lech da Iman” on the way to the Fermedahütte Hut. From there, continue to the valley station of the Fermeda chairlift and, as described above, follow the same route back to Ortisei.

The Seceda ski resort

Located on the sunny side of Val Gardena, in winter Seceda combines breathtaking panoramic views with a ski area offering the perfect slopes for every level of ability. Along the slopes, numerous ski huts invite you to take a break, offering South Tyrolean cuisine and panoramic views. The Val Gardena Ronda, linking seven ski areas, also passes through Seceda.
The La Longia run – meaning “the long one” – winds its way for 10 kilometres from Seceda down to Ortisei and is one of the “Legendary 8”, the eight most spectacular runs in the Val Gardena ski area.

Frequently asked questions about Seceda in the Dolomites

Is Seceda worth visiting?

Yes – Seceda is one of the most impressive viewpoints in the Dolomites. The narrow ridge overlooking the Odle peaks, the 360° panoramic views from the viewpoint and the wide range of hiking and skiing opportunities make Seceda a captivating destination at any time of year.

How hard is the hike to Seceda?

Seceda can be reached without much effort thanks to the cable car and chairlift – the ridge itself can be traversed via easy, well-developed paths and is also suitable for less experienced hikers. The hikes onwards to the Baita Odles hut or Troier-Hütte hut are also easy and suitable for walkers of all abilities. More stamina and sure-footedness are required for more challenging routes, such as the descent on foot via the Furnes alpine pasture.

Can i do Seceda and Alpe di Siusi in one day?

In principle, both destinations are easily accessible by cable car from Ortisei. As the cable cars to Seceda and Alpe di Siusi depart from different locations in the village, it’s worth allowing a little extra time for the transfer. Those who want to combine both highlights in one day should start early and limit themselves to a shorter stay at each destination. For a more relaxed experience, consider visiting Seceda and Alpe di Siusi on separate days, giving you plenty of time to enjoy both areas at your leisure.

What is the closest city to Seceda?

Ortisei in Val Gardena is the closest to Seceda, with a cable car taking you directly up to the mountain station.

Can you hike Seceda in winter?

Seceda is a ski area in winter, but the area also offers winter hiking trails, which are ideal for snowshoeing. The Baita Curona hut is a popular destination for snowshoe hikers, as is the route via Col Raiser and the Mastlé alpine pasture to the Troier Hütte hut.

Do you need to buy Seceda cable car tickets in advance?

Buying your ticket in advance is not essential, but recommended. Since visitor numbers at the mountain station are limited, there may be waiting times at the ticket office, especially during the summer months. The online ticket can be conveniently booked in advance with a fixed time slot, saving you the hassle of queuing on site.

Is Seceda better at sunrise or sunset?

Both times of day are beautiful on Seceda. Sunrise is considered even more spectacular, thanks to the Geisler rock faces catching the first light from the east. However, the cable cars do not run at this time. That means spending the night at one of the mountain huts.
